Belgrade's Position
Belgrade is the capital and largest city of Serbia. The city lies on two international waterways, at the confluence of the Sava and Danube in north central Serbia.
Situated at the historic borders of eastern and western empires, Belgrade has been shaped by its history, each leaving traces as new generations continue to build and fight over this highly prized city. With a population of around 2,000,000, Belgrade lies 116.75 metres (383 ft) above sea level and is located at coordinates 44°49'14" North, 20°27'44" East. The city has an urban area of 360 square kilometres (139 sq mi), while together with its metropolitan area it covers 3,223 km² (1,244.4 sq mi).
On the right bank of the Sava, central Belgrade has hilly terrain, while the highest point of Belgrade proper is Torlak hill at 303 m (994 ft). The mountains of Avala (511 m (1,677 ft)) and Kosmaj (628 m (2,060 ft)) lie south of the city.[19] Across the Sava and Danube, the land is mostly flat, consisting of alluvial plains and loessial plateaus.
